Warning: Scorching heat, second-level warning in Hungary

Summer extreme heat record high temperature

Due to extremely high daily mean temperatures, the National Meteorological Service has issued a second-level (orange) warning for Thursday for the counties below in Hungary.

The meteorological service has issued a second-level/orange warning for Thursday for the counties of Transdanubia, and Pest, Bács-Kiskun and Csongrád-Csanád counties due to high daily mean temperatures. The daily mean temperature in those areas could be above 27 degrees Celsius.

In Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hajdú-Bihar and Békés counties, a first-level warning is in effect, with daily mean temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius, hvg.hu reports.

In a warning sent to the Hungarian News Agency (MTI), the National Meteorological Service said that daytime temperatures are expected to increase on Thursday. Mean temperatures are expected to rise above 27 degrees Celsius in the Transdanubian region and the Danube-Tisza area.

In the central and south-eastern parts of the Great Plain (Alföld), average temperatures are expected to be around 25 degrees Celsius. The highest daytime temperatures on Thursday will be between 31 and 38 degrees Celsius.

They added that the atmosphere will remain unstable on Thursday, with thunderstorms expected mainly in the east, accompanied by downpours, hail and gusty winds. On Thursday, thunderstorms may drift into the Alpokalja region, where gusty winds may be the main accompanying phenomenon.

Due to thunderstorms, a first-level warning is in effect for the counties of Vas, Zala, Nógrád, Heves, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hajdú-Bihar, Békés and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg. A first-level warning for cloudbursts has been issued for the counties of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg.

A second-level (orange) warning has been issued for the whole country for Friday due to the incoming cold front, as more severe thunderstorms are expected.

On Saturday, there will be plenty of sunshine and few clouds in the west. In the east, clouds will become more intense, with a higher chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mainly in the Transdanubian and Zemplén regions, north and northwest winds will be strong, and gusty winds may occur around thunderstorms. The minimum temperature will be between 16 and 21 degrees Celsius, the maximum between 25 and 31 degrees Celsius.

Saharan dust arrives in Hungary with the heat

With the heat comes Saharan dust from the south to Hungary. It is already clearly visible on satellite images.

In the next period, the dust will move northeast and east with the flow. It is expected to reach Hungary from tomorrow, the National Meteorological Service reported on their Facebook page.

Stifling temperatures: severe heatwave sweeps over Hungary this week

Heat Sun Sunset Nap Hőség Naplemente

The summery warm weather is here to stay for this week. In some places, the temperature will reach 36 Celsius degrees during the hottest hours.

The weather in Hungary has been rather erratic this year, with an unexpectedly high amount of rain overall. However, as Index has reported, there will finally be plenty of sunshine this week. Nevertheless, we should look out for occasional showers and thunderstorms. According to the National Meteorological Service’s national medium-range forecast, here’s what to expect this week:

Monday

The sunny spells will be interrupted only by a few clouds. Although, rain is rather unlikely. Winds will remain breezy, with daytime highs between 28 and 33 degrees.

Tuesday

Similarly to Monday, Tuesday will be sunny with a few clouds and cloud cover. Showers and thunderstorms might occur. Winds will remain mostly moderate, only the areas with thundery weather will experience stronger gusts of wind. During the early hours, temperatures are likely to fluctuate between 12 and 15 Celsius degrees. In the afternoon, the temperature will reach 29-34 Celsius degrees.

Wednesday

Wednesday will be sunny with some clouds or cloud cover. In certain parts of the country, showers and thunderstorms are very probable. A gusty wind might be experienced in those areas. In the morning, the temperature will be around 14-21 degrees, and by afternoon, it will rise to 29-35 Celsius degrees.

Thursday

In a similar fashion to the previous days, we can soak up plenty of sunshine on this day. Only a few clouds or cloud cover will cast some shadows. Scattered showers and thunderstorms with a temporary increase in winds might break out. During the early hours, the temperature will be around 15-22 Celsius degrees. In the afternoon 28-36 degrees are to be expected. A lower temperature is anticipated in the northeast and a higher temperature in the western and southwestern parts of Hungary.

Friday

With partly sunny skies, clouds may build up and merge into a thicker cloud cover. Showers, thunderstorms and even heavy downpours will form in several regions. Fortunately, this will not mean an end to the heat. The air will remain quite warm; 16-23 degrees in the morning, 28-36 degrees in the afternoon. Warmer weather may be experienced in southern and southeastern areas.

Saturday

Clouds will be more prominent with several hours of sunshine. Showers and thunderstorms may form. North wind will increase in some areas, and in regions hit by thunderstorms, gusts will be experienced as well. The lowest temperature on this day will be between 14 and 21 Celsius degrees, while the maximum will be 25-31 degrees.

Sunday

The sunny days are back. Light clouds and cloud cover may still occur with possible showers and thunderstorms in certain areas. Some regions will experience gusts and strong winds from the north and northeast. The temperature will be around 11-19 Celsius degrees at dawn, and it will rise to 25-31 degrees in the afternoon.

On Sunday morning, clouds will move away from the east, with sunny spells expected throughout the country, and only a few brief showers in the northeast. Winds will decrease, with gusts in the central part of the country. The weather will be getting warmer, with highs between 25 and 30 degrees.

In addition, Időkép warns that between 10 AM and 4 PM on Sunday, there will be very strong UV radiation throughout the country. So be sure to protect your skin when you are outdoors. The best option is to use a 50 SPF sunscreen and drink lots of water!

Next week, the heatwave will arrive, according to the weather portal. Budapest foresees maximum temperatures of around 33 degrees Celsius next week, even 35 degrees Celsius on Thursday.

LIST – Here are the paid beaches at Lake Balaton: expect a 30% increase

balaton_sound_beach_fun

It seems like summer is here (after a rather sudden shift) and the weather is perfect for a mini vacation pre-season. Those arriving at Lake Balaton for the first time this year will have to face a roughly 20-30 percent increase in prices compared to last year. This includes a rise in beach fees.

Get ready for a 20-30 percent price increase at Lake Balaton

After the rainy weeks of the last period, it looks like the good weather has finally arrived. Temperatures could reach up to 29 degrees Celsius during the Pentecost long weekend, and the water of Lake Balaton could be as high as 21 degrees, Pénzcentrum reports. Lodgers and businesses around the lake are busy getting ready. In some places, we can even expect to find beach bars open.

Those arriving on the shores of Lake Balaton for the first time this year will face a price increase of around 20-30 percent. It is no wonder: domestic inflation is still well above 20 percent, and accommodation and service providers have been exposed to the current trends several times over, while having to raise wages.

It is true that there are still many places around the lake where you can go swimming for free. However, where there is a charge, they have raised it again. Pénzcentrum has collected the 2023 prices for several beaches, which you can see below. The prices are compared to those of 2021 and 2022. First, you can see the prices in HUF, then the prices in EUR in brackets.

PHOTOS: Unprecedented tornado hit Hungary

Hungary Tornado

For the first time this year, a tornado ravaged Hungary on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Időkép, the twister was seen late Wednesday afternoon near the village of Kétegyháza, in the southeastern tip of Hungary.

This is the first time Hungary has had a landfalling cloud cone in 2023, while a smaller vortex that has not yet touched down was already formed 28 times.

Attila Tomka spotted the tornado near the Orthodox cemetery in Kétegyháza. “I took a snap with my phone at five times magnification but it dissipated in a few seconds,” Tomka recalled the rare natural phenomenon.

Not only in Kétegyháza, but also in Pusztaottlaka, a settlement further west, the tornado was visible for a short while.

Almost 30 °C, summer arrives in Hungary this weekend

Summer Hungary Balaton

Yesterday was already partly sunny in many regions of Hungary, but the summer season will kick off today with peak degrees between 24 and 28.

According to index.hu, we can enjoy a lot of sunshine this weekend. Of course, there can be showers in the Eastern counties, but the weather will be perfect for late spring and summer activities. At night, the temperature will not fall below 7 and 14 Celsius degrees. Meanwhile, the peaks will be around 25.

The Hungarian Meteorological Services issued a yellow warning to four Eastern counties because of possible thunderstorms and hails. Sun will rule on Sunday, as well. The peaks will be between 24 and 29 °C.

However, Blikk reminded UV-B radiation will be extremely high on Saturday, the index will exceed 7. Therefore, we should avoid being exposed to the Sun between 11 AM and 3 PM. Even 15-20 minutes can result in skin redness.

Here is when summer will arrive to Hungary

Indian summer Hungary

In the coming days, rain and heavy precipitation are expected across the country. Showers and thunderstorms are expected until Thursday. However, on Friday, this will change radically.

Last Thursday, the weather phenomenon that can produce the highest amount of rainfall this time of year arrived in Hungary, 24.hu reports. It is a shallow cyclone, which has delivered and continues to deliver rain in several waves.

“In the next few days, it will rain everywhere again, with the heaviest rainfall expected in the western part of Transdanubia,” meteorologist László Molnár, an expert at Kiderül.hu, told 24.hu.

This means that in the next few days, we can expect 10-20 mm of rain across the country, even 20-40 mm in the Western Transdanubian region. This will take the form of heavy, but quiet rain on Tuesday and showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, 19 May, we will see a radical change in weather.

Only scattered precipitation is likely in the last days of the week. From Monday, the usual warm May weather with showers and thunderstorms will set in. It will stay between 17-22 degrees at the warmest until the weekend.

From Saturday, summer will arrive, with highs of 22-27 degrees.

According to the longer-term forecast of agronaptár.hu, the warmer, drier weather will only turn to rainfall again around 6-8 June.

Get ready: Hungary’s weather takes a turn, and not a positive one

Budapest at early night

The weather will turn wet this weekend, with no shortage of rain. Winds will be brisk and strong at times, with highs generally between 13 and 21 degrees.

Friday

Spring Hungary weather

On Friday, the sky will be mostly cloudy or overcast, with a higher chance of scattered clouds in the south and southwest. This may cause the sun to shine for longer or shorter periods, the National Meteorological Service reports.

Behind the breaking, weakening precipitation zone, several waves of showers and thunderstorms, mainly accompanied by downpours, will arrive from the south. Northeastern areas will see the least chance of precipitation.

East, south-easterly winds will become stronger in several places, Index reports. Daytime highs will generally be between 12 and 17 degrees Celsius, with slightly warmer in the south and southwest.

Saturday

On Saturday, clouds will break up and decrease from the southwest during the day. In the afternoon, more clouds will arrive from the southwest. Scattered showers and occasional thunderstorms are possible. The wind will be strong from the east and southeast.

Temperatures will be between 7 and 12 degrees at dawn and 13 to 20 degrees in the afternoon.

Sunday

On Sunday, skies will be mostly cloudy or overcast. However, there may be some thin cloud cover in the northeast at first, with filtered sunshine likely. Rain, showers and thunderstorms are expected in the southwest and west.

Hungary will see record heat this summer, but the worst is yet to come

dryness drought

Since measurements began in 1901, 2022 was the hottest year in Hungary. And it does not stop here, unfortunately. A strong El Niño is expected this year. El Niño is a climate pattern in the Pacific Ocean that affects weather worldwide. El Niño could lead to a hotter-than-normal summer already this year. However, the bomb is expected to explode in 2024 – and it will not spare Hungary.

El Niño is bringing drought and extreme heat to the globe – and Hungary

Parts of the world will experience a brutal drought. Europe, and Hungary in it, will be hit by heat and stifling humidity. The average temperature of the Earth could rise by well over 1.5 degrees Celsius, 24.hu warns. A “hot summer” is no longer just about sweating more than usual for a few days or weeks. In Hungary, too, heat waves now regularly exceed the level that is healthy for the human body. In fact, the heat is indirectly causing the premature deaths of thousands of people.

And if we look at the statistics, the number of heatwaves is increasing, while summers are also getting hotter overall. For example, 2022 was the hottest in Hungary since records began in 1901.

2023 will be exceptionally hot – but 2024 will be even hotter

Kiderül.hu meteorologist László Molnár also expects an extremely hot summer and believes that 2024 will be even hotter. According to Mr Molnár, The year 2024 could be 1.5-1.7 degrees Celsius warmer than average. The previous record was 1.35 degrees Celsius in 2016.

Europe is expected to have warmer than average temperatures and more wet and humid weather. The summer will end with a stormy August, followed by a mild autumn and a much wetter than usual winter. The same is true for Hungary as well: a humid, hot, stormy summer, followed by a mild, rainy winter with up to 20 percent more rainfall than usual.

In conclusion, László Molnár underlines that we are at the gateway to a historic event. El Niño is expected to be officially “born” within a month, and it will be fast-rising as we start from a higher global baseline temperature.

Photos: a dazzling aurora shone over Hungary

aurora

Hungary was treated to an unusual celestial spectacle on Sunday night: an aurora visible to the naked eye shone in the sky.

The aurora first appeared in pink, then took on greenish hues over Hungary on Sunday night, says Időkép.

The aurora is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the Sun with the Earth’s magnetic field, the magazine reminds us. During collisions, the energy of the particles is released in the form of electromagnetic radiation, which we see as aurora. The phenomenon is typically observed near the Earth’s magnetic poles, but during stronger geomagnetic storms it can sometimes be seen further away from the poles, including from Hungary.

The amazingly coloured aurora could be seen from many parts of the country with the naked eye, videos of the aurora can be found in this article.

It will be almost summer today in Hungary, but rain will return

balaton_sound_beach_fun

Did you plan a trip for the weekend? Today will be perfect for an excursion because it will be almost summer. But tomorrow, rain will return and rule the weather for the next few days.

Today, the daily maximums will reach 20-24 degrees in Hungary, and even in the evening, the temperature will not go lower than 9-15 degrees. There will be cumulus clouds in the Southern regions of the country. Veil clouds will rule the Western parts of Hungary and get thick in Transdanubia. Winds will only be strong in the area of Lake Fertő, blikk.hu wrote. There will be showers in Győr-Moson-Sopron, Vas, Veszprém, and Zala counties. Even thunderbolts, strong winds and blizzards may take place in these Western counties. Here is a temperature map for today:

On Monday, the sky will be cloudy, and there will be precipitation in many parts of the country. The daily maximum will be “only” between 13-19 degrees. That will continue on Tuesday, but the temperature will not decrease, temperature will be around 10-13 degrees in the Northeast and 14-19 degrees in other parts of the country. Wednesday will be drier and sunnier. Showers may occur, but the temperature will be between 11-17 degrees. Thursday will also follow that pattern with small showers and cumulus clouds, IdÅ‘kép wrote.

Wizz Air rescued Hungarian passengers left in trouble

Hungarian brands Wizz Air

As we wrote before, Wizz Air could not take off yesterday because of the extreme strong winds. Now they sent a new flight to the island to take home the passengers.

According to telex.hu, the emergency flight of the Hungarian low-cost airline took off Friday morning to bring home all the passengers stuck on the Portuguese island Madeira. The airline’s Budapest–Funchal flight could not land on 4 April because of the strong winds. Therefore, they landed in Tenerife, but 200 passengers planning to come home from Funchal had to remain.

However, they took care of them. They provided transfer and accommodation for their passengers on the island. Based on the previous plans, the plane that had landed in Tenerife would have flown for them. However, the flight was cancelled later. Wizz Air told its passengers they could only bring them home after the danger departs. That means they did not stop communicating with their customers. As a result, we could not read about complaining Wizz passengers in the Hungarian press.

Finally, they sent an emergency flight to the Portuguese island, which could take off from Funchal at 12.10 PM and arrive in Budapest at 5.05 PM. Wizz Air highlighted that they passed all the relevant information to their passengers. However, people who bought their tickets via travel agencies or online ticket vendors might receive the latest info later than others.

Even though the original flight’s cancellation was due to the extreme weather and the strong winds, Wizz Air took care of its passengers stuck in Madeira. They promised to refund the cost of the accommodation and provision to a reasonable extent. Passengers can begin to file their claims online or at customer service.

Madeira’s airport, named after Portugal’s football star Cristiano Ronaldo is among the extreme airports. It has a 2,781-metre-long runway, but part of it is in the sea, next to steep rocks. Only a few pilots are good enough to land safely there, and they have to complete simulations successfully. Furthermore, strong winds are common. Because of the strong winds, multiple airlines cancelled their flights to the island.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Half of Hungary covered by snow, here is what to expect at Easter

Hungary weather snow

Hungary is not a big country, but yesterday it seceded into two parts considering weather and temperature. Winter has come back in April, which is not exceptional, but now it seems it will linger longer than expected and bring low temperatures. Thus, we should find our coats, scarves and hats again.

Snow arrived in Hungary

According to Blikk, on Thursday, the snow layer was 10 centimetres in many places in the country.

Here is where you can find snow in Hungary currently:

And that thickness may double in the next couple of days. The Hungarian Meteorological Services warns us to expect a lot of precipitation and a maximum temperature reaching only 10 degrees. The slow warmup will start only on Sunday, and when Hungarian men and boys begin the traditional sprinkling on Monday, they should expect sunshine for some hours and temperatures between 12-17 °C.

Időkép wrote that the temperature contrast between West and East Hungary was significant yesterday. In the West, it was 10-12 degrees, while in the East, it was 0-2. Not surprisingly, Northeast Hungary was covered by snow. Nyíregyháza, a city of almost 150 thousand inhabitants, saw more snow than during the winter. Here are some photos made in the Northeastern regions from Baktalórántháza, Tiszacsernyő, Záhony, and Sátoraljaújhely:

Időkép says that the snowfall will remain with us even during Good Friday. At night, the temperature decreased everywhere to below 0 degrees. In Zabar, thermometers measured -7.6 °C. Here is a map of what to expect today:

Happy Easter or happy Christmas

Index.hu writes that in some places in the Zempléni mountains, the thickness of the snow layer may exceed even 15 centimetres. The Hungarian Meteorological Services issued a warning for three counties because of heavy snowfall: Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Hajdú-Bihar, and Borsod, where 5-10 centimetres of snow will fall. In the Bükk and Mátra, the layer will “only” be 3-7 centimetres.

Heavy snowfall causes accident on M3 motorway in Hungary

Winter Hungary snowfall Lillafüred

Snow is falling heavily, it even caused an accident on the M3 motorway in Hungary. Make sure to check the road conditions before leaving home!

An extensive block of precipitation reached the northeastern part of the country, resulting in snowfall northeast of the Debrecen-Tiszaújváros line.

We reported yesterday that motorists should be careful when on the road, as heavy snowfall is expected on Thursday and Friday. The snow really did arrive and it was not kind.

In snowy weather on the M3 motorway in the Nyíregyháza area, a car crashed into a barrier. The inner lane was closed at km 217 on the side towards Vásárosnamény, Infostart reports.

“Snow is falling in the area, so please drive according to winter road conditions,” Útinform warns.

The National Meteorological Service (OMSZ) confirmed on Facebook that snowfall and sleet are expected in several waves with varying intensity in the northeast of the country until Friday evening.

From late afternoon on Thursday, precipitation may turn to snow in the Bükk and Mátra regions, and a layer of snow up to centimetres thick may form. It has been warned that strong northerly and northeasterly winds may carry snow in the Bodrogköz and Szabolcs during the day on Thursday.

Caution: Motorists in Hungary can expect heavy snowfall on Thursday and Friday

Budapest Buda Castle Palace winter snow
