Tatai Patara Festival – Re-enacting the siege of Tata Castle
It was all of eight years ago that the Tatai Patara Festival has been launched. This year, the festival will be held from 22nd to 24th of May at the Tata Castle and at Eszterhazy Square. The organizers of the festival aim to commemorate the siege of the castle against the Turkish in 1597.
The Tatai Patara Festival is a restaging of the great siege of Tata Castle in 1597. The three-day journey is a special adventure offered to visitors by the colorful series of events, which bring back the life and historical events of Tata town in the Turkish age.
The three-day program series includes several events such as a torch-light procession, battles on the lake and on land, and an archer competition. The highlight of the festival, however, is the re-enactment of the attack against the main gate using the ‘patara’ (petard), which was then a new invention and first used – and played a major role – in the siege of Tata in 1597. In the meantime, both in and outside the castle walls, everybody can experience the more peaceful weekdays of the stormy past by tasting the food and drinks of the Renaissance Hungary, and by gaining an insight into the fashion and music of the Ottoman era.
During the Ottoman occupation, the castle of Tata was an important fortress. It was captured in 1543 by the Turks. During this period the castle had many different owners until it was burned down by the Habsburgs in retaliation for the Rakoczi’s War of Independence.
