Teen bomb threat shocks Budapest school: three minors detained

A 14-year-old student in Budapest sparked a major police response after calling his school and claiming there was a bomb inside the building. According to the Budapest Police Headquarters, the threat was made at around 8 AM on Wednesday, prompting immediate action from authorities.
Police units, supported by a criminal operations team, moved quickly to secure the scene and investigate the claim. However, no explosive device or any materials suitable for making one were found either at the school or in connection with the suspects, police.hu reported.
Three teenagers apprehended the same day
The boy was not acting alone. Investigators later determined that two acquaintances – another 14-year-old and a 16-year-old – had encouraged him to make the call. All three were identified and detained in Budapest later that same day.
They were subsequently questioned on suspicion of making threats against the public, a criminal offence under Hungarian law. The case is being handled by district police, with proceedings currently ongoing.
Authorities warn of serious consequences
The incident highlights a concerning pattern, as similar threats have recently been reported. In a separate case last year, a younger student allegedly made a bomb threat to avoid writing a maths test, showing how such actions (often perceived as jokes) can turn into serious legal consequences.
Authorities stress that even false bomb threats are treated as high-risk situations, requiring full emergency responses that disrupt school operations and divert police resources.
No explosives found, but investigation continues
Despite the alarming nature of the call, police confirmed that there was no real danger. The school was thoroughly checked, and no devices were discovered.
Officials emphasise that threats of this kind are prosecuted rigorously, regardless of the perpetrators’ age. It’s worth remembering that making false emergency claims can carry lasting legal repercussions.
