Street art is usually found in public locations, such as buildings, trains, any public surface really. It is most often executed outside of the context of traditional art vans. Other terms for this type of art include independent public art or graffiti, which is closely related to guerrilla art.

Guerrilla art aims to make a public statement about society. Common forms and media include spray paint graffiti, stencil graffiti, wheat pasted poster art, sticker art, street installations, and sculpture. Luckily, street art has moved from the beginnings of graffiti and vandalism to new modes. Nowadays, the main purpose of many artists is to hold a mirror to society, raise important issues, send messages, or just simple show beauty to their audience. We can find many varieties of street art in Budapest.

The largest “graffiti wall” of Budapest can found at Filatorigát, which is a rather huge area in Destrict III. Filatorigát is also special because it is one of the very few places where it is completely legal to create art on the walls. The walls are also regularly re-painted, so that new creators can gain space. Thus, the art is constantly changing, always offering something new and unique.

Street art events are also organised at Filatorigát, when a bunch of artists go there to create all at once. There is usually food and booze, and people can wander around and watch how the creations are born. As a matter of fact, you can check out this year’s event here: FILA GRAFF JAM.
