The Hungarian state may soon acquire Budapest Airport but there is a twist
According to Márton Nagy, the acquisition of the airport is on the home stretch, so the Hungarian state could soon own Liszt Ferenc Airport. However, the current owner denies this allegation and claims he has no intention to sell the airport.
The Hungarian state wants to buy the airport
“Budapest Airport is a strategic asset and should, therefore, be in Hungarian hands. The government is committed to repurchasing it, no matter who the owner is,” Minister of Economic Development Márton Nagy told InfoRadio.
According to the minister, preparations are already underway with the owner of Budapest Airport on the terms of the sale and the price. The government aims to close the deal before the end of 2023.
Nagy claims that the owner of Budapest Airport, the German company Avialliance, wants to sell the company. “This deal would be important for all parties. The Hungarian government could further develop the airport, and the investors could be assured that this time with a different approach, the business will reap more profit.”

Will the owner sell it?
The German airport owner Avialliance told hvg.hu that it did not want to sell the airport. “Avialliance is a long-term investor with an interest in the sustainable development of the airport and the region.”
The company confirmed that the Hungarian government has the intention to acquire the airport, but the government said that it did not currently have the necessary funds to do so.
“Although the sale was not initiated by the shareholders, Avialliance and its co-owners are obliged to consider all offers, bearing in mind their resources,” revealed the airport’s general owner.
In 2021, the government already indicated that it would like to rebuy Budapest Airport. Interest remains, but it is questionable when and at what price the parties can reach an agreement.
What Orbán wants, Orbán gets!
Not enough money? No probs, there could very well be a firesale, becasue of a “sudden collapse” (know what I mean? 😉 ) of Avialliance (in Hungary), or the a/p could be Nationalized becasue of another “State of Emergency”.
The options are out there, we just have to wait and see which one our beloved PM will like best.
…The PM’s “Angel” is not in politics anymore to ask him to lay his hands off Avialliance.
Build a train or subway link!!! The airport cannot be considered modern without that!! Visitors must negotiate a clumsy bus ride or lengthy taxi lines.
Make luggage carts available! Everyone must schlep their luggage bc there are very few carts!! Thats 3rd world! C’mon, Budapest. You can do better.
Nothing new. Politicians involved – and a few of their toadies…

Believe there was an issue regarding the terminal parking – which apparently all of a sudden ran into issues regarding permits and procedures. This resulted in the area being a building site for years on end. Unrelated, of course.
