THE Ranking: Hungarian university in the world’s best 1%, ten others in the best 5%
There are multiple world-top universities in Hungary, while accommodation and living costs are low. Thus, it is worth continuing your studies in Hungary. And the latest Times Higher Education (THE) ranking supports that.
According to Világgazdaság, there are 11 Hungarian universities in THE’s latest ranking. Budapest’s Semmelweis Medical University is at the top of the Hungarian universities. That is in the world’s top 1%. Meanwhile, there are ten universities in the world’s top 5%. István Széchenyi University in Győr joined that elite this year. Based on the Global Innovation Index, Hungary’s innovation performance also emerged.
THE’s higher education ranking has been published since 2004. They consider three key markers while ranking the universities: education, research and business activity. The ministry praised the institutions of the Hungarian higher education since they can stand their ground in the killing competition of the Western European, North American and Asian universities.

Here are the best Hungarian universities
Hungary’s Semmelweis University performed outstandingly last year and emerged to the 251-300 position. The University of Debrecen advanced 400 positions, and it is in the 601-800 category. Furthermore, nine more universities appear on the world list: Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), the University of Óbuda, the University of Pécs, the University of Szeged, Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), the University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the University of Miskolc, Pannon University, and the István Széchenyi University.
Phil Baty, THE’s head responsible for global affairs, praised Hungary’s performance, and said that the Hungarian universities could solidify their position in their ranking. In 2018, seven Hungarian universities were in the ranking. Now there are eleven.
On the Global Innovation Index 2023, Hungary moved up one place and is now 33rd out of the world’s 132 countries. Considering “Knowledge and technological results”, Hungary is in the 26th position in the world.
