The new conference centre will make Balatonfüred the capital of conference tourism in the Lake Balaton region, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office said at the inauguration of the 10 billion forint (EUR 26m) investment on Saturday.
Gergely Gulyás said Balatonfüred had undergone a rapid development in recent decades and become the most visited settlement on the northern shore of the lake. However, the city still needed a conference centre, he added.
It has been a problem for decades at Lake Balaton, Gulyás said, that the settlements are filled with tourists in the summer but accommodation capacities remain unutilised from autumn to early spring. The conference centre also serves to ensure that many people will come to Lake Balaton in the autumn, winter and spring, as well, to hold events here, he said.
The centre has capacity for 1,200 participants. The investment won European Union funding of 4.5 billion forints.
