The US brings more nuclear bombs to Europe while withdrawing troops from Hungary and Romania

According to German media, the United States plans to increase the number of nuclear bombs stationed in Europe, even as American troops leave both Hungary and Romania.
The White House insists there is no troop withdrawal
This claim was also raised during Viktor Orbán’s joint press conference in Washington last Friday, when journalists questioned him about it. President Trump stated that no troop withdrawals are taking place. He expressed his fondness for Romanians and praised the excellent cooperation with Europe, though he acknowledged disagreements on immigration policy, which he said do not affect military cooperation.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth was quick to back his boss, adding that all parties concerned had been informed in advance about the planned repositioning, but insisted there were no withdrawals.
- Nuclear bombs in Hungary? That is not a joke!
In contrast, an article from Menedzsment Fórum reports that of the 1,700 American soldiers currently stationed in Romania, only around 1,000 will remain. The Russian newspaper Kommersant claims the move is intended to allow the redeployment of American forces to the Indo-Pacific region. Romania’s Ministry of Defence has confirmed this information.

According to Hungary’s Ministry of Defence, the withdrawal concerns a training unit stationed in the country, but the ministry emphasised that this is, in fact, a rotation-based redeployment. The operation does not affect the permanent American presence, such as the Heavy Airlift Wing based in Pápa. Incidentally, a 15-year-old Dutch girl disappeared from Pápa yesterday; her parents are believed to serve in the international unit.
A sensible redeployment
The decision appears logical given that the United States faces its principal global challenger not in the economically modest Russia but in China, whose GDP is now nearly on par with that of the US. The main “battlefield” with this Asian superpower is the Pacific Ocean, where Washington is steadily building its defensive umbrella. Meanwhile, the US has long urged its European allies to increase spending on defence, armed forces and the military-industrial sector. That is why the target for defence spending was raised from 2% to 5% of GDP — a move that could lead to substantial contracts for American arms manufacturers.

The U.S. may bring more nuclear bombs to Europe
Currently, around 84,000 American soldiers are stationed in Europe, compared with more than half a million during the Cold War. The largest contingent is in Poland, with roughly 10,000 troops, and this deployment will remain untouched by the current reshuffle.

German media, citing NATO sources, report that alongside troop redeployments and unit rotations, the US will deploy additional tactical nuclear weapons in Europe. According to available information, there are no nuclear bombs on Hungarian soil, but six NATO countries currently store them — with explosive yields ranging from 0.3 to 170 kilotons (for comparison, the Hiroshima bomb had a yield of 15 kilotons and Nagasaki’s 21 kilotons). Radio Free Europe reports that these weapons are held in the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey. Their total number currently stands at around 120, but reports suggest this figure will rise.

Deploying more tactical nuclear weapons sounds like a great way to promote the “Peace!” our Policians and Mr. Trump keep harping on about. Why have forward conventional forces and a robust missile defense when you can initiate a new arms race?
TLDR – forwarding tactical nuclear weapons signals a lower threshold for nuclear use. Mr. Putin et al have already threatened use of these types of weapons, however they have not yet appeared in theater. Lets see if this move will change their minds, equal out the potential mismatch?
Unfortunately Russia deployed new short-range nuclear missiles in Belarus and the US has now responded in-kind. War criminal Putin needs to withdraw those missiles. Russia has been using nuclear blackmail since the start of Putin’s invasion mistake.
