PM Orbán acting as Trump’s envoy in Moscow? Big business on the horizon with the Russians

The first to reveal the visit was investigative journalist Szabolcs Panyi in a newsletter of VSquare, a Warsaw-based media house that declares itself independent. Panyi’s information proved accurate, and he recently reported that PM Orbán and the Hungarian government failed to notify any NATO or EU member states in advance about their Moscow talks.

Orbán did not notify his allies about his talks with Putin

In a separate Facebook post, Panyi explained that Orbán and his team only admitted on the very morning of the trip — Friday — that they planned to meet and negotiate with the Russian president that day, Hungarian time. According to the official line, Orbán discussed energy issues and ways to end the war with Putin. However, just yesterday, in an interview with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Orbán claimed that the Ukrainians can’t win, only the Russians can, so Ukraine must be turned into a buffer state between NATO and Russia.

Panyi also emphasises that Orbán notified neither his EU nor NATO partners ahead of the journey. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticised the Hungarian prime minister for travelling to Moscow without European authorisation or prior consultation. While not legally required, such forewarning has generally been the norm. The Slovenian prime minister also condemned the trip, suggesting that Orbán is no longer playing on the European team.

Trump’s envoy?

Orbán’s camp openly admits they see themselves not as part of the European team, considering Europeans broadly as warmongers while portraying themselves as peacemakers. Still, Orbán shares close ties with former US President Trump, making it hard to imagine no prior discussions with the leader of the great power that effectively shapes NATO policy. This is especially notable as the US special envoy Steve Witkoff is currently negotiating in Moscow.

Before, in an ATV interview, Orbán explained that he tries to extract as much information from Putin as possible during their talks. Therefore, he tends to remain silent and instead of explaining his opinion he tries to listen to the Russian standpoint in the different issues.

In a post late yesterday, Péter Szijjártó told Chancellor Merz that the Hungarian government does not need authorisation or permission to negotiate with whomever it chooses.

Big business on the horizon with the Russians?

Following the meeting, the official news agency MTI reported that Hungarian partners could acquire numerous sanctioned Russian oil industry interests. This was also reported by Alexander Novak, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister, via the Russian news agency Interfax.

The scope is relatively broad, potentially involving interests in Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania through sales and acquisitions. Earlier reports suggested MOL might take over the Russian Gazpromneft stake in Serbia’s NIS oil company, while Lukoil is frantically seeking buyers for its foreign holdings. Those who defy US sanctions risk being cut off from international payment systems, effectively freezing their operations.

  1. The naysayers neigh. They are as laughable as they are impotent. Their wet dream of a third world war is in tatters while those who refused to take their bait, often at great expense politically and monetarily, prosper. Long may it continue.

Death to globalism! Death to socialism! Death to fascism! (= E.U., U.N., W.E.F., etc.)

  2. Oh yeah, you blame othes for war and you wish others for death. Shame on you Michael or whatever your real name is, you are like Orban: just an hypocrat and opportunist

      • Why are you not satisfied to hold your opinion and express it, but, you have to try to stigmatize those with whom you disagree.

Is this what your family taught you?

  3. The Russians have nothing to worry about with their subsidiaries that must be sold. Orban will look after Russian interests with MOL holding them as if they never left Russian hands.

    • Do I understand you right, Dear Larry : anyone who would have friendly relations with Russia is their puppet?

  4. “PM Orbán acting as Trump’s envoy in Moscow?”

Yes, of course Orban is doing this.

In this time of complete intolerance and Western Elite dictatorial attitudes, Orban, reasonable and friendly as he is, is uniquely positioned to facilitate dialogue.

Though I am very aware of Orban Viktor’s weaknesses in the economic sector, I am thankful to God for him.

He is a ray of sunlight in a very dark time.
