Hungarian celebrity was outraged because she could not order in Hungarian in a Budapest café
A contestant of the Hungarian reality show Való Világ (literally “Real World” – ed.) freaked out when she could not order in her mother tongue in a Budapest café. She already had problems with English in the reality show’s villa, but since then she has reportedly improved a lot. However, she still had trouble ordering in English.
The server did not speak Hungarian
In her Instagram story, VV Merci shared with her followers that she could not order her sandwich in Hungarian in a Budapest café because the waiter only spoke English. The reality show star says she was lucky to speak good enough English so that she could make her order, but a few years ago she would have been in trouble.
The former reality TV star was furious that the staff was not speaking Hungarian in a Budapest café. Merci did not excel in English in the 10th series of Való Világ, but she has reportedly made improvements since then. The young girl thinks that these days she would have no problem ordering in English but finds it unacceptable that she cannot use her mother tongue in one of Budapest’s busiest cafés, Blikk.hu reports.
She does know some English
„As unbelievable as it gets, I’ve learned enough English to order myself a baguette, but… Dear Starbucks on Király Street! Why can’t you hire people who are Hungarian? If I passed by a couple of years ago, I would have had to use hand gestures to ask for a baguette, in Hungary. I mean, it’s my thing (“fault” – ed.) too, but still..,”
Merci fumed in her Instagram story that was available for 24 hours.
Who is VV Merci?
Merci is a 21-year-old girl from Esztergom, Northern Hungary. Her occupation is salesperson, but her original profession is carpenter. She was raised by his grandmother and has lived alone since she was 17. Merci used to dance competitively.
Unfortunately, the case of VV Merci is not unique in Budapest. Many of us have experienced that some food delivery drivers are not Hungarian and do not speak any Hungarian at all.

This individual needs to seriously take a REALITY check, of her-self.
Put the shoe on the “other” foot, deal with Banks, Immigration Departments, Hospitals – the list is endless – still in Hungary, that if English is your “Mothers Tongue” – its a MASSIVE challenge dealing – communicating in Hungary.
We ALL have to be TOLERANT and understanding, and exercise Patience – NOT expect perfection for our “needs” in our dealings with each other in Hungary.
We have lived here 4 years – and could write a book, of experiences, through NOT speaking nor writing Hungarian only English – but we MANAGE – with a SMILE.
Tolerance – respect understand others – the situation or circumstances they are in – you are in – and then situations will work, that avoids heated exchange or bad temper behaviour or “Sucking the Bummy” – because, the world didn’t stop for me, and things didn’t happen for my satisfaction and personal needs.
if Merci reacts so hysterically because of such a insignificant thing, I don’t wanna know her reactions in her normal life. Better stay away of her. LOL
By the way, the bars in the city center make money with tourists, that’s why they need kind staff speaking English. Maybe they didn’t find a Hungarian who speak good English and want to work with a smile. We are aware about the bad customer service attitude in Hungary. And reading this article, it’s easy to see why the bad attitude in customer service, it’s bad attitute in general unfortunately.
Tolerance? Patience? That’s something modern peasants will always lack
So many proud ignorant people live in Budapest. Learn English, it’s not that difficult.
I understand her concern and things like this can happen in lower paying occupations where there is a labour shortage. I suspect that the waiter must have spoken some Hungarian but it was poor. At least she was not asked to communicate in Russian. Beware when that starts happening.
She’s not a star. Just a reality show participant.
And she’d better learn English instead of getting hysterical because of her poor language skills.
The IRONY! of going to Starbucks, aka an American Café chain and being mad that they speak English 🤣 if she feels so strongly about having Hungarian staff, she should stick to drinking goulash instead. #godblessamerica 🇺🇲🏈🤣
It is important for each country to protect their heritage, while moving into the present & future. Same goes for the language. So is there no unemployment in Hungary that outside people who are not Magyar speakers must be hired? Or are the unemployed getting too much $ to stay at home & work on the side for family, friends, cash or reciprocated in other ways? I am aware that there are lots of adults over 18 like Hazbeen Sussex who still take housing & money from parents. That might lead to lazy Hungarians with poor work ethic. Just a suggestion.
Businesses must have staff to be open. That is something the gov’t must ensure happens. That is the way to deal with economic issues. Ensure that everyone must work who is able bodied, those who are disabled must be teamed up with suitable jobs to ensure they can keep their independence and self respect. These are goals that burocracy can attain rather than get in the way of as they so often do.
Her disgusting photo, if representative of her attitude diminishes her as as person. Have some class, even when your expectations are not met. One of the commenters is correct, why support a non Hungarian business instead of a mom & pop one? YOU create the country tht you live in ultimately. The next time you have a problem, find out something about the issues from a manager & then will know how to make a difference. If you REALLY care about the language issue or any other. Be the solution not the problem.
