Ukrainian bank demands return of millions of dollars, euros and gold seized by Hungary
The Ukrainian state-owned Oschadbank is pursuing legal action after Hungarian authorities seized two of its cash-in-transit vehicles on 5 March. The Counter Terrorism Centre (TEK) detained the bank’s staff and expelled them from Hungary, while the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) confiscated the transported funds.

The bank’s statement on Facebook described the Hungarian authorities’ actions as an “illegal seizure,” noting that the vehicles and their contents, including around 40 million US dollars, 35 million euros, and nine kilograms of bank gold, remain in custody. Oschadbank will appeal the expulsion of seven employees, citing a lack of consular support and legal assistance during their detention. Legal proceedings will also be initiated to reclaim the confiscated property.
International transport agreement highlighted
As Telex reports, Oschadbank stressed that the cash transfers between it and Raiffeisen Bank Austria were conducted under an international agreement, following European customs procedures and international transport regulations. The bank holds a valid international transport licence, and all transfers since the outbreak of the war have been carried out overland on a weekly basis.
And Hungary demands the return of Hungarian oil stuck in the pipeline in Ukraine.
