UNHCR director calls for simpler registration, sufficient services for migrants
Budapest, September 8 (MTI) – Migrants arriving in Hungary seeking international protection should be offered simpler registration procedures and sufficient services, UN Refugee Agency UNHCR Director of the Bureau for Europe, Vincent Cochetel said in Budapest.
Cochetel told a press conference that the agency was asking Hungarian authorities to make the registration procedure simpler, allow humanitarian organisations to help migrants at the collection points set up near the borders, and improve the conditions for asylum-seekers.
He also said newly approved legal regulations affecting migrants should be imposed in keeping with European Union and international laws. He also asked the authorities to make a distinction between people who need international protection and those who don’t.
Cochetel said EU member states should demonstrate shared responsibility, predictability, solidarity and trust instead of leaving just a few countries to deal with the problems.
