Varga: Govt using every means to combat VAT fraud
Budapest, October 22 (MTI) – The government is using every means at its disposal to take action against anyone evading VAT and other abusers of the tax system, the economy minister said on Wednesday.
Mihaly Varga told journalists in Parliament that a government investigation had uncovered concerns raised by a US company which produces cooking oil.
He said that since December 2013, the tax authority (NAV), as part of its own investigatory activities, had pursued criminal procedures in the area of the food industry. The crimes committed in an organised way had caused especially large financial drawback for the central budget, he added.
The case dates back to reports of cheating handed over to the tax authorities in September 2011, by the leadership of the American company Bunge Zrt which produces Venusz cooking oil. Subsequently, the NAV met the chiefs of the company twice and started an investigation, Varga said.
