(MTI) – The 710 vehicle makers operating in Hungary generate nearly one-fifth of the country’s industrial output and 18 percent of its exports, foreign trade chief Peter Szijjarto said in Budapest on Wednesday.

Addressing a ceremony marking the production of the one-millionth start-stop system by Continental Automotive Hungary, Szijjarto underlined the role of German vehicle-industry firms in the Hungarian economy, noting that three German car manufacturers and 15 major German vehicle-parts makers are currently operating in the country.

Continental Automotive Hungary, the Hungarian unit of Germany’s Continental AG, employs 2,800 workers and 500 engineers at its plants in Budapest and Veszprem (W Hungary).

Continental has invested 15 billion forints (EUR 49.3m) since 2009, including 2 billion forints in European Union and Hungarian state support won at two tenders, managing director Robert Keszte said.
