Welcome news: Free travel in Hungary for these citizens

Hungarians living abroad can now travel even more for free in Hungary. Adults will be able to use free public transport between settlements in Hungary 12 times a year instead of the previous 4.

The amendment to certain transport-related laws submitted to the Parliament reveals that the following Hungarians living abroad will be entitled to unlimited free travel in Hungary:

  • children under the age of 6 in local and interurban public transport,
  • children between the ages of 6 and 14 in local public transport,
  • people over the age of 65 in local and interurban public transport.

Even more free travel for Hungarians living abroad

The following persons may travel free of charge on domestic interurban transport:

  • people between the ages of 14 and 65 can use public transport freely 12 times a year instead of 4,
  • in the case of group travel, a group of at least 10 persons under 18 years of age covered by the law and two accompanying adults travelling with them, once a year, subject to prior notification.

According to the final provisions of the proposal submitted by the government to the Parliament, this passage will enter into force on the 3rd day after its publication, Economx reports.

The discount is available to holders of a Hungarian identity card. The conditions for applying for the document are:

  • Hungarian mother tongue
  • knowledge of the Hungarian language
  • claims to be a person of Hungarian nationality (e.g. Hungarian language certificate)
  • is registered as a Hungarian national by a church in the country of residence
  • is a registered member of a Hungarian organisation in the country of residence.

Up to now, the Hungarian card has allowed the holder to travel within Hungary 4 times a year at a 90% discount. However, this will become free and available for 12 trips from spring.
