Wizz Air: Huge changes coming to in-flight pay

In a move that aligns with the global trend towards digital payments, Wizz Air has announced that it will transition to a cashless payment system on board its flights starting 1 April 2025. This decision comes shortly after discussions about constitutional protections for cash usage in Hungary. The shift to cashless transactions is part of Wizz Air’s strategy to improve the quality of its in-flight services, enhancing both efficiency and hygiene.
Benefits of cashless payments
The adoption of cashless payments is expected to streamline the in-flight purchasing process. By eliminating the need for cash handling, Wizz Air aims to reduce transaction times, allowing passengers to enjoy their flights with less interruption, Telex writes. Additionally, this move contributes to a cleaner and safer environment for both passengers and crew, as it minimises the handling of physical currency, which can be a vector for germs.
Digital payment options
Passengers will have the option to use bank cards, including those from major providers like Visa and Mastercard, as well as Revolut cards. Furthermore, digital payment methods such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Android Pay, and Google Pay will be accepted, offering a wide range of convenient payment solutions for travellers.
Pre-flight preparation
To further enhance the passenger experience, Wizz Air’s mobile app will allow users to purchase vouchers in advance. This feature enables travellers to plan their in-flight purchases more efficiently, ensuring they can enjoy their preferred snacks and beverages without worrying about payment methods during the flight.
New guidelines
As part of this transition, Wizz Air has introduced new guidelines to ensure smooth transactions. The total amount that can be spent per passenger is capped at EUR 150. For transactions exceeding EUR 50, passengers will need to present their boarding pass, adding an extra layer of security to the payment process.
Impact and compatibility
While this move towards cashlessness may raise questions about compatibility with proposed regulations aimed at protecting cash usage rights, Wizz Air’s decision reflects a wider industry move towards digital payments. This trend is driven by consumer preference for convenience and efficiency, as well as the benefits of reduced cash handling for businesses.
The Hungarian airline’s decision to go cashless is a strategic step forward in enhancing the in-flight experience. By embracing digital payments, the airline aims to offer faster, cleaner, and more secure transactions, aligning with the evolving expectations of modern travellers. As the aviation industry continues to evolve, such innovations will likely become more prevalent.
