Wizz Air announces long-awaited flight to Anatolian metropolis

Wizz Air, the Hungarian low-cost carrier, is rapidly rolling out new routes following a strategic shift. Rather than expanding eastwards into the Middle East and Central Asia, it is now focusing on its stronghold in Eastern Europe, where it ranks among the leading airlines.
Wizz Air unveils exciting new destination
According to Airportal, Wizz Air will launch thrice-weekly flights between Budapest and Ankara, the vibrant capital of Turkey. Türkiye is Hungary’s second most significant NATO ally after the United States and maintains a relatively balanced relationship with Russia.
The budget airline already operates direct flights from Budapest to Antalya and Istanbul. With the addition of the Ankara route, it will offer a third direct connection to the Turkish market, marking the first time Wizz Air has linked the two capital cities.

The first flight, confirmed by aviation regulators, is scheduled to depart Budapest on 29 April, with services operating on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

105 flights weekly strengthen ties
Ankara, Türkiye’s second-largest city, has a population exceeding 5.5 million and serves as the cultural and economic heart of the Central Anatolia region. Originally, Istanbul was the capital, but following Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s revolution, Ankara was chosen to lead the modern, secular republic after the fall of the Ottoman Empire.

Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, announced on Monday morning that both countries have agreed to revise their air transport accord. This will increase weekly flights between Budapest and Turkish cities to a remarkable 105.

Convenient departure times
Wizz Air’s Monday flights will depart Budapest at 7:00 am, Wednesday at 5:50 am, and Friday at 8:00 am, with an estimated flight time of two and a half hours. Return flights will leave Ankara just 30 minutes after landing in Budapest on the corresponding days: 11:05 am (Monday), 9:55 am (Wednesday), and 12:05 pm (Friday), maintaining the same journey duration, according to Budflyer.
In other news, Wizz Air’s Facebook page also announced that Qatar Airways will reduce its Budapest–Doha flights from seven to five weekly from 13 April to 13 June, suspending services on Mondays and Saturdays except for 1 June.
