Hungary’s women’s under-19 team have sensationally defeated European championship qualifying mini-tournament group favourites Denmark 2-0 to win their group and qualify for spring’s Elite round stage.
Going into the last day of group fixtures Hungary had defeated Montenegro 6-0 but only drawn with Slovakia 1-1 to lie two points behind the Danes who had thrashed the Slovaks 10-1 and Montenegro 7-0. That meant only a win would suffice for Hungary to top the group and secure qualification but against the odds they managed the feat, Mónika Gelb slotting Emese Szakonyi’s right-wing cross into the bottom corner of the net in the 70th minute before Dóra Süle’s trickery and accurate shot from 15 metres virtually ensured a famous win for Hungarian women’s football.
Hungary head coach Sándor Turtóczki was understandably delighted after the match:
“The girls selected worked really hard as a team today – everyone was in the right place and they performed the tactical tasks we’d discussed right until the very end. The group was desperate to progress to the next stage and this was truly an example of how well we can play. We defended real well until the end and in the second half we were excellent in the midfield area and were dangerous in front of goal. We also shared the tasks well so had energy. I congratulate the girls on today’s achievement – it was truly nice work!”.
