World-Famous Literary Scholar Gives Lecture in Budapest
Dr. Ernst van Alphen, the highly acclaimed professor of literature visits Budapest on the 27th of November, and gives a lecture at Holocaust Museum, writes hvg.hu.
The professor of Leiden University examines the representation of the holocaust in literature and in visual arts. One quote from Alphen sheds some light on his thoughts of holocaust in arts: „The education I have received had not made me realize the importance of the holocaust, it was the works dealing with the holocaust that made me understand the significance of this apocalyptic chapter in human history.”
On his lecture in Budapest, Alphen will focus on the works of Dirk van Dodeweed, the artist who uses the name alias Armando. This significant painter, sculptor and writer was born in Amstredam and spend his youth in Amersfoort, near a Nazi concentration camp. This circumstance left a deep impact on him, which can be depicted even in his late works.
