World’s top Roman law experts gather in Budapest for prestigious conference

The Societe Internationale Fernand de Visscher pour l’Histoire des Droits de l’Antiquite (SIHDA), the most prestigious international conference on ancient Roman law, opened its 78th session in Budapest on Tuesday.

The conference in Budapest titled “Centre and Periphery: The Jurists of Rome, Imperial Legislation, and Practice in the Provinces” is being attended by some 200 legal scholars and legal historians from 31 countries.

The event, which runs until Saturday, is being organised by the National University Of Public Service in collaboration with Eötvös Loránd University’s Faculty of Law, Pázmány Péter Catholic University and Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary. It will feature 144 presentations as well as SIHDA’s annual general assembly.

Lászlo Trócsányi, the rector of Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary, where the conference is being held, emphasised the institution’s respect for Roman law.

“We believe that Europe was built on three intellectual and spiritual pillars: the Acropolis of Athens, which smybolises Greek philosophy, Capitoline Hill, which symbolises Roman law, and Golgotha, which symbolises the unifying function of Christianity,” Trócsányi said, adding he was convinced that these foundations would continue to be strong pillars of Europe in the future.

Hungary last hosted the SIHDA conference in 1991 at the University of Miskolc.
