Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Marija Zakharova has accused the West of seeking to strip Hungary of its sovereignty, including by denying it access to energy at reasonable prices, after explosives were discovered near the Serbian stretch of the TurkStream pipeline leading into Hungary.

“They want to deprive Hungary of its sovereignty,” the diplomat told the TASS news agency. “They are doing this through various means: politically, by meddling in its internal affairs and elections; economically, by forcing it to take decisions that damage its economy and the welfare of its people; and in the energy sector, by trying to prevent Hungary from accessing quality sources at sensible prices.”

Zakharova noted that Budapest had “thwarted every previous attempt”. “So they have now turned to violent scenarios of the kind tested on Nord Stream,” the Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman declared.
