“In view of Ukraine’s threats, international crises, physical violence and foreign interference it has again been proven that [Hungary’s ruling party] Fidesz is the safe choice” in the upcoming election, the prime minister’s political director said on Facebook on Sunday, adding that “we won’t let [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky have the last laugh.”
Orbán talks about plot between opposition Tisza Party and Ukraine
Balázs Orbán, citing news portal Telex, said economic sentiment was favourable for Fidesz’s reelection, with a consumer confidence index rising 12 points since July last year and reaching a two-year peak in February. The political director also suggested that both Telex and Politico had “uncovered” a “plot” between the opposition Tisza Party and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Orbán praised the government for its instant security measures in response to developments in the Middle East, stepping up checks and increasing police presence in public spaces and near key facilities. “Law enforcement will be as stringent as possible with persons associated with extremist Islamist groups,” he added.

The political director also noted rising gas and oil prices due to the situation in the Middle East, and said “in this situation Zelensky decided to enter the [Hungarian] election campaign supporting Tisza … therefore Hungary will watch closely its key energy infrastructure.” “We know that the Ukrainians blew up the Nord Stream gas pipeline and any energy facility using Russian fuel could be a target of Ukrainian sabotage actions,” he insisted.
Zelensky’s blackmail can backfire
However, Orbán also noted public opinion poll results, saying that “Zelensky’s blackmail could backfire … fully 69 percent of the people condemn Ukraine’s move, and the same percentage of people refuse to pay more if Russian energy is abandoned.”
The Hungarian government will maintain its counter-measures “until it receives oil” from Ukraine. It will not deliver diesel to Ukraine and will not support the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, and will continue to block the EU’s 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine, the official said according to the Hungarian News Agency.
“Peace!”
“No War!”
Maybe some outreach of our Politicians to Mr. Trump would be more useful than blaming Ukraine?
