Police detained and charged 15 human traffickers in a week-long international operation targeting human trafficking, the National Bureau of Investigation of the Standby Police (KR NNI) said on the police.hu website on Monday.

The operation, conducted under the European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats (EMPACT) between June 8 and 12, focused on preventing sexual exploitation, forced criminal activity, and forced begging, as well as uncovering related crimes. The operation involved 59 countries and four international organisations (Europol, Frontex, Interpol, Ameripol).

As in previous years, the operation in Hungary was coordinated by the KR NNI’s Human Trafficking Unit, with several institutions and authorities participating alongside the police, the Hungarian news agency wrote.

Police checked 5,103 people, 1,847 vehicles, 673 locations — including service sector premises, entertainment venues, private homes, massage parlours, agricultural and public areas, businesses, border crossings — and 4,565 documents during the operation.

Of the 15 Hungarian suspects, 12 are charged with human trafficking for sexual exploitation, two with human trafficking for labour exploitation, and one with human trafficking for forced begging and forced labour. Seven victims were identified: three victims of sexual exploitation — two of them minors — and four victims of forced labour.
