András Szabó, the mayor of the village, married an 18-year-old mother last Saturday.
According to Blikk, no residents remained at home in the small Hungarian village last Saturday. Kunhegyes’s main square became crammed with people who wanted to attend the ceremony during which the 78-year-old local mayor tied the knot with a girl 60 years younger than him. Locals called it “the wedding of the century”.
Kunhegyes’s mayor, the 78-year-old András Szabó was elected in 2019 and supported by Fidesz, Orbán’s party. The girl he married is 18-year-old, and she already has a 4-year-old son.
Locals state that she became pregnant with a local man in his thirties when she was only 13-year-old.
The wedding was a hot topic among the village’s residents.
- “His former wife was also younger than him, maybe 25 years old. But they divorced in less than a year. Will these two last until their first wedding anniversary?”
– a local wondered.
Blikk says it was a startling sight how the tall but old groom and the girlish bride walked down the streets to attend their wedding ceremony to the tunes of “Lakodalom van a mi utcánkban“.
People took photos as if a Hollywood star arrived in the village. When they reached the registry office, somebody started to clap, and almost all followed.
Blikk wanted to ask the mayor about the wedding, but he refused to answer. The bride’s mother did not comment on her daughter’s choice either.
Locals are divided about the wedding. József (67) could not imagine his life on the side of a girl 40 years younger than him. He thinks an 18-year-old girl is just a kid. He would marry a woman at least 40.
Júlia is in her 80s, but she was shocked when she heard about the wedding. “This is more than enough. We were together with my husband for 46 years until God called him. I have never seen such a thing.” Andrea Háziné Szabó defended the couple. Her husband is 30 years older, and they raised three kids. “I did not care about others’ opinion. My husband was a man of a kind when he was young. If love comes, it comes” – she added.
