Air Asia to launch direct flights between Budapest and Thailand
Turizmusonline.hu writes that Asia’s biggest low cost airline, Air Asia plans on expanding in Europe and North America, for which they already received the necessary permissions from the Federal Aviation Administration. Their flights might even concern Budapest.
Kamarudin Meranun, the managing director of the company, said that, for instance, Hawaii is among the first new targets, but he didn’t want to mention further details.
He said that they were working on the reestablishment of the European flight network, which was abolished in 2012 due to the high kerosene prices and taxes. Back then, Air Asia specialised in long-distance flights that mostly flew from Kuala Lumpur to London. The airline already laid claim for the necessary permissions.
Previously, the managing director of subsidiary company Thai Air Asia, Tassapon Bijleveld said that the airline plannes to expand in Eastern Europe, and that they would launch discount flights from Thailand to Budapest, Prague and Warsaw. At the time of the statement, airportal.hu looked up Budapest Airport, who confirmed that they were negotiating with the company, but couldn’t share details.
Air Asia, located in Malaysia, launched their first flights in 1996. Since then, the company has become Asia’s biggest low cost airline with its subsidiary companies regarding passenger traffic and size of fleet. They fly to 176 destinations with a 176 airplane fleet, their 2016 passenger traffic is expected to have exceeded 50 million. In the business year of 2015, the company achieved 450 million dollar in-plant and 121 million dollar tax payoff.
