The film adaptation of a world-famous Hungarian novel makes its debut in cinemas – VIDEO
After having its international debut at festivals, The White King, the novel originally written by György Dragomán, is finally to be released in Hungarian cinemas this March, writes hvg.hu.
Looking for Eastern European texts, Alex Helfrecht and Jörg Tittel found the work of György Dragomán, The White King, and apparently were quite influenced by it, as they directed their first feature film, an adaptation of the novel.
The literary piece follows the life of Dragomán and his family after they fled from Ceausescu’s dictatorship, leaving their home Marosvásárhely behind in the ‘80s. Thus it gives an insight into how a young boy tries to live on without his father who has been taken to a labour camp and to adapt to the new circumstances he faces.
According to Dragomán, the film will be set in England, post-Communism, which he regards as quite an interesting take on of the story, and a bit sci-fi-like. Starring in the film, the directors could get actors and actresses, such as Jonathan Pryce, Agyness Deyn, Olivia Williams, and Greta Scacchi to portray the characters.
The world premiere of The White King was at the Edinburgh Film Festival last year, and audiences in Hungary will also soon become able to watch it in cinemas, as it hits the Hungarian screens on March 9. Until then, why not watch the trailer below, or read the original novel if March seems to far just yet.
