Counter Terrorism Centre: Hungarians not involved in Islamic State fights

Budapest, September 15 (MTI) – The Hungarian secret services and law enforcement authorities share the view that Hungarian citizens are not involved in fights in Syria and Iraq associated with the Islamic State, the head of Hungary’s Counter Terrorism Centre said today.

Janos Hajdu talked to the press after a closed meeting of parliament’s foreign affairs and state security committee where he had given a briefing about the security risks connected to IS. Hungary must monitor foreign citizens travelling to and from the areas involved in the fights and maintains international cooperation with secret services in other countries to have up-to-date information, he added.

The meeting was also addressed by Istvan Mikola, state secretary for security policy at the foreign ministry, Laszlo Tasnadi, state secretary of law enforcement at the interior ministry, and military and civil secret services leaders.

Head of the foreign affairs committee Zsolt Nemeth, of the ruling Fidesz, said that IS currently represents the most significant security challenge next to the Ukraine crisis.
