Jeremy Corbyn to participate at Socialist congress in May
Budapest, April 8 (MTI) – Jeremy Corbyn, the head of Britain’s Labour Party, has confirmed he will participate at a congress of the opposition Socialists on May 27, the head of the Socialist party board István Hiller said on Saturday.
Corbyn’s participation at the congress shows the increasing international support for the Socialists, Hiller said after a meeting of the board.
He told MTI that party leaders fully support the Central European University. The Socialists will participate at a demonstration on Sunday protesting legislation that makes the CEU’s continued operation impossible, he added. Hiller said the Socialists would not participate under any party banner because the matter at hand involves not just the CEU, but freedom of education in general.
The party’s board discussed education in broader terms at the meeting and agreed that the Socialists must present a candidate for prime minister and a platform of substance if it is to offer an alternative to the current government. The current government’s approach to education is based on ideology, Hiller said.
All indications show that public education is in a nose dive, he said, adding that the government’s aim to make it more difficult to get into university is a dangerous trend. The Socialists would like to see as many people as possible in higher education, studying for as long as possible, he said.
The party board expresses their deepest sympathies to the victims of the attack in Stockholm on Friday, Hiller said.
