According to the website of the Parliament’s Visitor Centre, the time when the Parliament was built was an economically very dynamic period. This was when the Heroes’ Square, the Andrássy Avenue, the Nyugati railway station and the continent’s first underground was built. However, the biggest undertaking was definitely the construction of the Parliament. One of the aims was to use solely Hungarian materials and to work with solely Hungarian artisans and manufacturers.
Back in the day, people came up with several locations and plans. In the end, Imre Steindl was chosen to design the building. He designed a building that expressed the power and confidence of the nation at that time. The Parliament was born under the stars of Historicist Eclecticism. It has a Baroque layout and an overall Baroque atmosphere combined with Neo-Gothic details.
