This is how the Hungarian Parliament was built – VIDEO
It is Hungary’s top tourist attraction, it is the symbol of the capital city, it is part of the World Heritage and it was recently chosen as one of the world’s top 25 landmarks. The building of the Hungarian Parliament is an outstanding architectural treasure, which is rightly referred to as one of the most beautiful parliament of the world. Would you like to see how it was built?
According to the website of the Parliament’s Visitor Centre, the time when the Parliament was built was an economically very dynamic period. This was when the Heroes’ Square, the Andrássy Avenue, the Nyugati railway station and the continent’s first underground was built. However, the biggest undertaking was definitely the construction of the Parliament. One of the aims was to use solely Hungarian materials and to work with solely Hungarian artisans and manufacturers.
Back in the day, people came up with several locations and plans. In the end, Imre Steindl was chosen to design the building. He designed a building that expressed the power and confidence of the nation at that time. The Parliament was born under the stars of Historicist Eclecticism. It has a Baroque layout and an overall Baroque atmosphere combined with Neo-Gothic details.
The sizes of the house are quite breath-taking: the wing parallel to the Danube is 268 metres long (longer than the Palace of Westminster), its biggest width reaches 123 metres. The cupola symbolising the unity of legislation is 96 metres tall. Unfortunately, Imre Steindl passed away before the Parliament was finished.
Zoa Studio made a short, animated silent-film, which shows how the House of Parliament was built between 1885 and 1902. During the 17 years of construction, one thousand people worked on average, they moved 176 thousand m3 soil, 40 million bricks, half a million footing stones and 40 kilograms of gold. Watch how history comes alive in the video 🙂
