Hungary aims to become ‘opinion setter’ in fight against persecution of Christians, minister says
Hungary seeks to become an “opinion setter” in the fight against the persecution of Christians, Human Resources Minister Zoltán Balog said on Thursday.
It is Hungary’s “moral obligation and interest” to help Christians in their home countries with programmes such as church building or scholarships. Aiding Christians in their home countries will also reinforce their intention to stay in the homeland they have occupied for two thousand years, Balog told public radio.
The government aims to aid groups “where help can be truly useful, groups of people that are close to us and with whom we have a real connection”, he said.
Balog noted that the government had made a “unique initiative” by setting up a deputy state secretariat to coordinate aid for persecuted Christians. Hungary’s scholarship programme has already attracted 400 applicants for 100 places. Further, the government will organise an international conference in the autumn on the persecution of Christians and plans to fund research centres, he said.
