Here is the winner of Excellent Hungarian Honey of the Year 2017 award

Hungary’s very best honey was selected at the 10^th Honey and Gingerbread Festival in Gyula on 9 December, Soszinuvidek.24.hu reports. A fennel honey won the Excellent Hungarian Honey of the Year 2017 award this year. The fennel honey is produced by Beáta Mikóné Hirth in Gyula. Besides winning the Excellent Hungarian Honey of the Year 2017 award, the same fennel honey was also the No. 1 in the other breed honey category.

Ferenc Haász, chairman of the Beekeepers’ Association of Békés county told MTI:

“This year, we have received 352 samples from 140 different Hungarian apicultures who all wanted to enter the competition. This is a record number in the history of this competition. Altogether, honey samples came from 110 different places in Hungary. We have received samples of 35 different types of honey.”

The honey samples were judged based on several criteria: colour, smell, pureness of taste, water content, packaging, purity of production. Samples were also examined in a laboratory setting. Pollen content and fructose-glucose ratio were also looked at.

Winners of the many different categories this year get an exclusive sticker which they can put on their packaging next year, which proves the place they have achieved in this competition, so that customers will be aware as well.

The winners of the acacia honey category are Roland Remete from Kecskemét and Ferenc Hammer from Bonyhád. This category was probably the hardest to pick a winner from since hundreds of different types of acacia honey samples were entered into the competition. This is the reason why organisers decided to give two awards within this category.

• Acacia honey category – Roland Remete from Kecskemét
• Multi floral honey category – Zoltánné Gulyás from Kecskemét
• Monofloral category – Zoltán Tojzán’ lime honey
• Sunflower honey category – Ábrám Méhészet from Miskolc
• Colza honey category – Csaba Ujfalusi from Kőrösladány
• Special honey category – Károly Horváth’s colza cream with lemon
