Change language:

Here is part 2 of the article about beautiful waterfronts in Hungary that deserve more recognition. As it has been already mentioned in part 1, Szeretlekmagyarország.hu assembled a list of 13 waterfronts in Hungary that are not so well-known, even though they are beautiful places to be. The list aims to encourage travellers to think beyond the Lake Balaton when it comes to a waterfront trip in Hungary.

Lake Tisza

Lake Tisza is the largest artificial lake in Hungary that is located in Heves county. As part of the ongoing Tisza River flood control project, the Tisza Dam was built in 1973. It was filled by the 1990s, resulting in a 127 km² lake. The lake has an average depth of 1.3 m, and it contains 43 km² of small islands. Following the reservoir’s completion, the lake became a popular holiday destination among Hungarians, since it compared favourably with the crowded and expensive Lake Balaton.

The arboretum in Vácrátót

Many brooks and small lakes can be found in the arboretum in Vácrátót. Visitors can feel like they are walking in a fairytale forest. The botanical garden shows its different side each season. The variety of aster flowers, the spectacular graminaceous plants and the flamingo flowers in the greenhouse are all worth seeing even in January.

Óvár

The Tihany peninsula is a favourite travel destination in Hungary mainly due to the famous Tihany echo and the Benedictine Tihany Abbey. However, the peninsula has less well-known parts that offer exceptional experiences for visitors. On the East side of the peninsula, there are many caves carved into the basalt rocks that are called Barátlakások.

These caves were created by Basilian monks who used to live in these cave houses in the 10th century. This area also offers a spectacular view of Lake Balaton.
