This is officially Hungary’s best red wine

Hungarian wine writers chose Csaba Koch’s Csanád Cuvee 2012 from the Villány Wine Region to be the best red wine in the country, TurizmusOnline.hu reports. Imre Györgykovács’s Nagy-Somló Furmint 2015 was selected as the best white wine.

Last year, Thummerer Winery’s Egri Bikavér Grand Superior 2012 was selected as the best red wine in Hungary. This year’s winner, Csaba Koch has been making wine for almost 30 years.

About Csaba Koch and the Koch Winery

Csaba Koch started to make wine in the Hajós-Baja Wine region in the Great Hungarian Plain in 1990. By the early 2000’s, he became well-known within the Hungarian wine community with his Irsai and Cserszegi white wines. Then, his wines became recognised at more and more international contests, winning many golds.

After his first success, Csaba Koch started to make wine in the Villány Wine Region, in the Imre-valley in Diósviszló to be more exact. This was when his red wines began to become quite well-known and successful, besides his white wines. Today, the ambitious winemaker has two estates, one in the Hajós–Baja Wine Region and one in the Villány Wine Region.

Accomplishments

His Csanád cuvee 2012 was named after his son Csanád, and now, this particular red wine was selected as the best red wine in the country by Magyar Borszakírók Köre (Circle of Hungarian Wine Writers).

The same red wine won gold at the Italian competition Emozioni dal Mondo Merlot e Cabernet Insieme held in Bergamo, Italy two years ago. The Csanád Cuvee 2012 was also awarded the Press Prize. At the same contest, another Koch wine, Cabernet Sauvignon Premium 2012 also won gold.

Koch’s Csanád Cuvee 2012 also won the Top Gold title at the PAR Wine Award International in Dusseldorf last year.

In 2017, Koch Winery has been awarded Hungary’s most beautiful vineyard, and Csaba Koch has been nominated for Hungarian Vintner of the Year four times. In 2014, Csaba Koch received the Winery of the Year award.

Red wines are especially famous in Hungary, and many Hungarian red wines are world-famous. The Hungarian Egri Bikavér, for example, is a wine known by almost every wine expert in the world.

The most popular types of red wines in Hungary are cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot, which are being planted in a 6000-hectare-area in Hungary. This is one-third of the area that is planted with different types of blue grapes in Hungary.

Red wine festivals are held all over the country, the most popular ones are in Villány and Eger, but many events are organised in Budapest as well.
