Amazing success: Tímea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic triumph at the Australian Open

Hungary woke up to a beautiful morning: the Tímea Babos (HUN) & Kristina Mladenovic (FRA) duo ranked in the 5th place defeating the Yekaterina Makarova & Yelena Vesnina (RUS) duo at the women’s doubles’ final of the Australian Open.

According to nemzetisport.hu, this was the first tournament where Babos and Mladenovic joined their forces again after splitting up at the end of 2015. They were quite a successful duo, they won several tournaments together, but the Grand Slam title was missing… so far.

This is a huge success for the Hungarian tennis department, because more than 30 years have passed since the last Hungarian victory at a Grand Slam.

It was a high play since the Russian duo was fighting for a career Grand Slam (winning all four Grand Slams), while Tímea Babos was striving for her first Grand Slam title after losing two Grand Slam finals in 2015 and 2016.

Babos and Mladenovic started out great; the managed to get several break points, out of which they played on one of the most crucial moment, thus winning the first set. After that, their performance stabilised so much that the Russian double simply couldn’t come up to them. Despite some faults here and there, the Hungarian-French duo won all of the crucial points.

Take a look at the last point. How joyful!

“First off all I want to congratulate our opponents, they played fantastically. Then, I must thank Kiki for these two weeks. We played together after a two-year break, and it was an unforgettable experience. There were tough moments, but it feels amazing that we can share this success with those who came from faraway places to see us and cheer for us” said Timi.

“It feels so good to hold this trophy in my hand finally. Timi is an old friend of mine, we went through a lot together, so it is amazing that we finally managed to triumph” said Kristina.

Congratulations!!!
