The best non-art related museums in Budapest

Paintings, sculptures, and other artefacts come to a lot of people’s mind when they think about museums. However, it is good to know that Budapest has much more to offer when it comes to culture. Magyarorszagom.hu collected the best offers.

The Hungarian National Museum

This museum that is the biggest in Hungary operates in a remarkable neoclassicist building in the city centre. Here, visitors can get to know the Hungarian culture from the beginnings: from the Palaeolithic through the Ottoman invasion to the communism in the 20th century. The Hungarian Natural History Museum

The mission of this museum is to let visitors get closer to flora and fauna in Hungary. The collection displayed here includes an unbelievable ten million objects. There are permanent and temporary exhibitions as well. Furthermore, guided tours offer a deeper understanding of this topic. The museum offers interactive exhibits, games and many programmes for all age groups.

The Museum of Ethnography

Visitors can take a closer look at the Hungarian culture, traditions, handmade works, and artefacts here. The museum has many exhibitions; this is why you should check out the website. Unfortunately, the museum is closed until 2020 due to renovation.

The Aquincum Museum and Archeological Park

In the Roman Empire’s times, Hungary was part of the Pannonian province, and the city of Aquincum was built that time. Today, permanent exhibitions introduce the artefacts found here during the excavations. Additionally, visitors can get to know more about the Roman times as well.

The Pinball Museum

This is Europe’s biggest slot machine museum, and it has an interactive pinball exhibition. There are 130 machines from the 19th century to up until today so visitors can keep track of the pinball machine evolution. The museum operates since 2013, but it already has big success.

The Hospital in the Rock

This museum is one kilometre long and lies under the Buda Castle. Once, this museum functioned as a civil defence emergency hospital, hidden from the public. It was used until 1956 and was a secret place until 2002. The Hospital in the Rock functions as a spectacular museum today. It opened in 2008 after the decryption. It has Hungary’s biggest waxwork exhibition that demonstrates the hospital’s history and the development of the army remedy. It also displays the tools of the civil defence.

The House of Terror Museum

This museum informs visitors about the tragedies and horror in Hungary caused by the oppression in the 20th century. The Arrow-Cross Party (Nyilaskeresztes Párt) had its headquarters in this building when it came into power during the last days of the Second World War. After that, it served as the main building of the State Protection Authority (államvédelmi hatóság, ÁVH). The museum opened in 2002 and offers a very deep understanding of the terror regime’s dark era. Read more information HERE.

The Holocaust Memorial Center

This museum opened in 2004 and has permanent exhibitions about antisemitism and the Holocaust. It displays many original photographs, documents and personal belongings of the era. There is also a memorial wall where 500 thousand victims’ names are written.

The Memento Park

At Memento Park, visitors can take a look at statues from the communist regime’s era. They had been collected and put in this park after the end of communism in Hungary in 1989. There are guided tours during which visitors are informed about this 40-year-long period of the Hungarian history.
