Budapest (MTI) – The green opposition LMP party has launched an online consultation on emigration, co-leader Bernadett Szel said on Saturday.
The high number of young Hungarians leaving the country poses a “real national problem” and the government should deal with this rather than focusing on immigration, Szel said.
The party is calling on Hungarians who have moved abroad and those that sympathise with them to give “sincere answers” to nine “sincere questions” posted on LMP’s website, she said.
The results of the consultation will be presented to the government, Szel said. She added that the government’s claims that Hungarians settle abroad only to seek adventure is wrong.
An estimated 350,000 to 600,000 Hungarians have left the country and recent surveys show that every tenth Hungarian is ready to pack up and follow suit because they see no future at home, Szel said. The real problem is poverty even among those that have jobs because Hungarian wages are so low that it’s not possible to live from them, she said.
