The best outdoor theatres in Hungary for warm summer nights
According to funzine.hu, the lovely summer weather is not only perfect for enjoying a cooling spritzer, but also for spending the night in an open-air theatre. Hungary offers a wide variety of outdoor theatrical experiences that will certainly be unforgettable. Let’s see five popular options!
Margitszigeti Szabadtéri Fesztivál – Margaret Island Open-Air Festival
Budapest’s coolest outdoor theatre welcomes guests with Verdi’s Rigoletto, Bernstein100 and several concerts in August. It is worth arriving on a boat to the feet of the iconic water tower of Margaret Island, however, a walk around the island is just as great of a starter. You could even kick the night off with a picnic 😉
Szegedi Szabadtéri Játékok – Szeged Open-Air Festival
A personal favourite – the Szeged Open-Air Festival is slowly but surely becoming world-famous. The venue is unbeatable with the imposing dome, not to mention the line-up, which is getting more and more diverse every year.
This year’s big hits were probably Romeo and Juliet and Fiddler on the Roof, while you can still buy tickets for the Sister Act in August.
Gyulai Várszínház – Gyula Castle Theatre
The atmosphere of the Gyula Castle gives you the feeling of being on cloud nine, but the ancient walls preserve traditional values as well – in the form of the open-air festival. You can choose from many performances in August (different every day) from comedy, folk dance show to kids’ theatre.
Tihanyi Szabadtéri Játékok – Tihany Open-Air Festival
The outdoor stage towers above Lake Belső every summer since 2004. Theatre companies come from all over the country to perform their plays in a picturesque landscape and air that smells like Lake Balaton (and lavender).
Esztergomi Várszínház – Esztergom Castle Theatre
Esztergom – a city of rich and exciting history – was the favourite place of many Hungarian kings, who loved to entertain their court. The tradition lives on in the form of the open-air festival. You can choose from concerts, plays, poetry nights etc. starting in spring every year.
You can top off the experience by arriving at the location on a boat 😉
