Hungarian foreign minister calls for EU policy change
The European Union must change its policy concerning migration, the Hungarian foreign minister told public Kossuth Radio on Monday.
Commenting on recent remarks by Andrea Nahles, the leader of Germany’s Social Democratic Party, Péter Szijjártó said SPD leaders were also to blame for Europe’s ongoing “struggle” with illegal migration.
Policies that aim “to weaken” member states go nowhere, he added.
According to Szijjártó, Brussels has been sending the message that illegal migration cannot be stopped, but Hungary “has proved just the opposite” at its southern border, the minister said, adding that the EU’s job now was to stem further waves of illegal migration at the Mediterranean Sea.
Concerning his talks with his Italian counterpart Enzo Moavero Milanesi last week, Szijjártó said they agreed that the EU must stop its policy that “encourages” illegal migration.
