Serbian man sentenced to 3 years for human smuggling
Budapest, August 10 (MTI) – A Szeged court found a Serbian man guilty of human smuggling and sentenced him to three years in prison, a spokesman for the Csongrad County prosecutor’s office said on Monday.
Ferenc Szanka said the defendant attempted to smuggle ten Syrian illegal border crossers from the border station at Roszke toward the inner parts of the country. The defendant and his attorney appealed the ruling.
The defendant had agreed with the Syrian citizens in Serbia that his partner would transport them to the border, and once they had crossed it illegally, he would pick them up and transport them to the inner parts of Hungary.
The defendant was waiting in his car when the illegal migrants arrived. They managed to get in the car, but the driver could not make a getaway, as police officers also arrived at the scene.
