Air pollution alert issued for several Hungarian cities
Hungary’s national environmental health institute (OKI) on Friday issued air quality alerts for several cities in the country.
On Thursday, concentrations of particulate matter (PM10) in the air exceeded the daily limits set by the European Commission in several parts of the country, OKI said on its Facebook page.
Of the cities surveyed, PM concentrations were found to be too high in Budapest, Debrecen, Dunaújváros, Győr, Miskolc, Pécs, Szeged, Székesfehérvár, Szolnok, Szombathely, Tököl, Várpalota and Veszprém, the institute said.
The effects of the air pollution level in these cities can be dangerous for vulnerable groups such as children, people suffering from a chronic illness and the elderly, OKI added.
It said no improvement in air quality was likely over the next few days.
As we wrote before, 25 years ago the residents of Budapest had to endure four truly hot days (above 32 Celsius degree) a year, while in the 2010s it has increased to 12, Index reports. According to the most likely forecast models by the end of the century, this number is going to reach a whole month, details HERE.
As we wrote on August, summer vacation in major European cities may result in health issues due to the heavy air pollution and breaches in the air pollution standards. Tourists and locals might as well start worrying in Budapest, too. Read more HERE.
