Tackling migrant crisis from humanitarian aspect priority, says ombudsman
Budapest (MTI) – In tackling the current migration situation, the humanitarian aspect must be considered a priority, the ombudsman for fundamental rights said on Friday.
There is an increasing number of children among refugees arriving at Hungary’s border who require special attention and care from the Hungarian state under domestic and international laws, Laszlo Szekely said in a statement.
The ombudsman urged Hungarian authorities to provide clear and authentic information to both the migrants and the Hungarian public and encouraged them to consult international human rights organisations such as the UN, UNICEF and UNHCR for professional help and advice.
The ombudsman supported the UNHCR’s call for the Hungarian authorities to allow humanitarian organisations provide continued help to migrants at the registration points set up near the borders, to improve the conditions for asylum-seekers and logistics coordination, as well as to improve communication with migrants.
Szekely said his staff would continue to monitor measures taken to tackle the humanitarian crisis.
