Get to know the novelties of the Mátra wine region!

The 90 ha Nagygombos Winery is located in Nagygombos, in the a Mátra Wine Region. The chief winemaker is a young lady, Anna Barta. A new era has been heralded by the introduction of the refurbished product range and the new design.

„Ever since we have taken over the winery I have been thinking about different ways to reinvent Nagygombos, and I think that finally all the pieces have fallen into place. A lot of work has been done to renovate the vineyards, the wines, and the restoration of the amazing, listed central building is just about to start”, says Anna Barta summarizing recent developments. „The time has come to redesign the labels. The commission was given to Eszter Laki graphic designer and she came up with a youthful, refreshing imagery. The wine range has also been streamlined and now we can work following specific plans while I can still pursue some excitingly challenging experiments.”

The graphic designer

Eszter Laki, the graphic designer has taken part in many exciting projects ranging from books, through coffee shops and restaurants to cosmetic products and in fact she has been involved in the design of wine and beer labels as well.

„For the basic line my intention was to create an easily recognizable, clear-cut, minimalist style for the labels. The colours return repeatedly on the individual bottles, the motif representing half a button on the two labels – a reference to the winery’s name (’Big Buttons’) – forms one complete button when two bottles are placed next to each other”, describes Eszter Laki the composition.

„To use the image of a chaffinch as the main motif for the top of the range line was a joint decision with Anna. Chaffinches learn to sing from their fathers, and Anna is also indebted to his father for giving her the inspiration to become a winemaker.”

Premium quality is hinted at by the golden colour scheme and the unique, stamp-like cutting, while the closeness to nature is symbolized by the use of earth tones. Sharing ideas was an important part of the creative process, there was ample time to get to know the client which enabled the designer to come up with unusual design features and apply extra techniques.

The new range

Belonging to the basic line Nagygombos Játékos Rosé is a blend that strives to combine the merits of several different varieties and to achieve balance and aroma complexity through skillful blending of its components. Nagygombos Kékfrankos Rosé showcases the elegance of the variety and is a Jolly Joker when it comes to matching with food.

’Illatos’ is a white blend expressing the fruit driven and easygoing character of the Mátra wine region and the same applies to its red sibling.

In the premium line which is called Barta Anna there is only one rosé. Gamay Noir Rosé is the most sophisticated of the three rosés and in this wine fruit aromas are complemented by extra layers deriving from discreet barrel ageing. As a founding member of Magna Mátra Historical Association the winery considers the preservation and promotion of the indigenous varieties of the Carpathian Basin a special responsibility and in line with this commitment premium quality ’Magna’ wines will always be crafted from hárslevelű, kékfrankos or kadarka. This product line is made the more exciting by the introduction of experimental bottlings made by Anna Barta.

Changes at the Estate

The winery places special emphasis on crafting rosés and they produce three different rosés each vintage. The moderate climate of the region facilitates a slow and balanced ripening process which results in grapes that are perfect for producing wines brimming with fruit and zesty acidity both being prerequisites for great rosés. The winery’s vineyards form one unbroken piece of land and are cultivated in an environmentally friendly way. In the cellar the goal is to produce wines with minimal intervention, respecting and assisting natural processes and never hurry them.

In recent years the main focus was to modernize and renovate the existing plantations and also to plant new blocks. Another important project is the renovation of the listed central building that was built in the 1880s; the goal is to have all the winemaking technology under one roof. When completed the fermentation room will be situated on the ground floor, right behind it the facilities to process the grapes and separated from the main building a newly built warehouse to store and age bottles.
