Over 30,000 Hungarians seek long-term residence in the UK before Brexit

More than 30,000 Hungarians applied for long term residence in the UK, but Hungary is not even in the top ten countries by the number of citizens applying. Over one million EU citizens have requested to stay in the UK after Brexit so far.

As we are getting closer to Brexit, over one million EU citizens have requested long-term residence permits in the United Kingdom. 958,000 permits were requested in England, 51,600 in Scotland and 12,900 in Northern-Ireland. Hvg reports that 31,500 Hungarian requested residence permit to be able to stay after Brexit.

According to the data from July, the top 4 countries by the number of citizens applying to stay in the UK are:

1. Poland (179,800)
2. Romania (141,200)
3. Italy (121,600)
4. Portugal (92,900)

The data shows that a total of over one million people had applied by now.

The EU Settlement Scheme

According to gov.uk, if you are an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen, you and your family can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to continue living in the UK after 30 June 2021. The EU Settlement Scheme was launched fully on March 30.  Over 50,000 people applied within the first week. Under the EU Settlement Scheme, EU citizens who live legally and habitually in Britain can be granted settled status, giving them the same rights to work, study and access benefits and services as they currently do. If your application is successful, you will get either settled or pre-settled status, and you will be able to continue living and working in the UK after 30 June 2021. The deadline for applying is 30 June 2021.

Of course, every applicant needs to prove their identity. All applicants need a valid passport or national identity card, and they also need to provide a digital photo of their faces.
