Gera announces his first Under-21 squad
September 6th is the date of our Under-21 men’s team’s first fixture under the guidance of Zoltán Gera and his backroom staff. Following this away clash with Denmark, Norway will be Hungary’s next opponent in the Pancho Aréna.
Zoltán Gera held a two-day training camp for his U21 squad members in Telki in mid-August ahead of their first two matches in September. Now, Hungary’s new U21 head coach has called up 23 players for the friendly matches away against Denmark and at home to Norway, a list which includes three foreign-based footballers, Attila Szalai, András Schafer and Bence Bíró.
The squad, which is now starting preparations for the 2021 Under-21 European Championship to be co-hosted by Hungary and Slovenia, will congregate on September 1st in Telki before travelling to Aalborg on September 4th for the match against Denmark two days later.
“The formation of the eventual squad (for the Euros) has only just begun, so the current group cannot be considered in any way the final one“, Zoltán Gera told mlsz.hu. “We keep an eye on the most talented players in the age group and there are several footballers I couldn’t invite this time, but on whom I will count in future. It is, of course, true the other way around too; every current member of the squad needs to prove that he really is worth his national-team place. Tough matches against two strong teams are ahead of us, but it is precisely these kinds of clashes that the team needs in order to develop“.
