MOL chief taken off Interpol wanted list

Budapest, November 27 (MTI) – Zsolt Hernádi, chairman-chief executive of Hungarian oil and gas company MOL, has been taken off of Interpol’s wanted persons list.

Interpol did not immediately respond to questions from MTI about the removal of Hernádi’s name from the list.

Hernadi’s name was first included on Interpol’s wanted persons list after Croatian police issued a warrant for his arrest in 2013 on suspicion of having bribed the former Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader with 10 million euros to obtain a majority stake in Croatian oil firm INA.

The Budapest Court of Appeals cleared Hernádi of the bribery charges last December.

His name was removed from the list in 2014 after his case came under review by the Commission for the Control of Interpol’s Files. He was again placed on the list in February this year.

Being on the list meant that any member state of Interpol would have had to take him into custody and return him to the country where he was originally wanted, in this case, Croatia.

Earlier this month, Austria and Germany suspended the arrest warrant for Hernádi. Unofficial sources indicated at the time that the two countries suspended the warrant on the grounds of double jeopardy, a defence that forbids a defendant from being tried again for the same charges following an acquittal.

Hernádi has continuously denied the bribery charges.
