Based on Hungarian folk predictions, we may have white Christmas
Change language:
This year, we can expect a milder and drier winter than in recent years and decades – M1 channel meteorologist Adam Fejos told hirado.hu.
Milder winter can be concluded from that according to latest measurements, the surface temperature of the Atlantic Ocean is higher than usual, and this is reflected in the weather of the Carpathian Basin’s winter weather as well. “As there are westerly winds, so the air, in which we live, usually comes from the Atlantic” – he explained.
“I do no say that there will not be daytime frosts, but we will probably be more above the average than below it” – he added.
This is supported by the Medium-range weather forecasts of the European Center published on the website of OMSZ (National Meteorological Service). Based on the forecast, the temperature will be a few degrees above the average until December 13, the day of Luca, and little rain is expected.
The meteorologist drew attention to the fact that although we can expect milder winter, there may be large temperature swings. Adam Fejos reminded that we had a very mild winter last year as well, there was hardly any frost, but we experienced an extraordinary cooling around New Year’s Eve, hirado.hu wrote.
Another issue: many people are interested in that whether a white Christmas will be. From a scientific point of view, it is difficult to predict due to the atmospheric changes. But there are folk sayings, of which one of the best-known is the “if Katalin knocks, Christmas is rainy” and vice versa – the meteorologist recalled.
According to folk beliefs, we can have a white Christmas – Adam Fejos said, but he added it has no scientific basis, just the folklore.
