Surveillance top internet security concern among young people
Budapest, December 16 (MTI) – Online surveillance and leaving a digital footprint are the main security concerns among young people who regularly use the internet, daily Népszava said on Wednesday.
Citing a recent survey carried out by K and H on the internet usage habits of people aged between 19 and 29, the paper said 56 percent of young people use the internet for browsing web pages and 49 percent use it for social networking. Fully 66 percent of respondents said they consider social media giant Facebook to be the most important tool for keeping in touch with friends and family.
Many of the people surveyed, however, said they are afraid of leaving a trail of their online activities and that various surveillance software can store data on them without their authorisation. About half of the survey’s respondents said they are concerned that data collection by government agencies can lead to an invasion of their privacy. Despite the concerns about surveillance, 10 percent of respondents said they share every single detail about their lives on social media while 53 percent said they share the most important events of their lives.
In its government requests report released in November, Facebook said the Hungarian government made 185 requests for data from a total of 224 accounts in the first half of 2015. Facebook said it complied with 67 of those requests.
