Gripens return to revamped air base in Kecskemét
Twelve Gripen fighters of the Hungarian Air Force returned to the Kecskemét air base on Tuesday after six months of temporary stay in Pápa.
Air force inspector Nándor Kilián said that the air base had been improved under NATO’s Security Investment Programme and Hungary’s Modern Cities scheme. It has been developed into an airport for military and civilian use, he added.
The runway has been modernised, new light technology has been installed and operating areas and support infrastructure have been upgraded, he said.
Commander of the air base Csaba Ugrik said an additional Gripen would arrive in Kecskemét later in the day and two fighters currently under repair in Sweden will join the fleet in the near future.
