Diana, Princess of Wales (1961-1997), was a member of the British Royal Family. She was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, the heir apparent to the British throne, and the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry. Diana’s activism and glamour made her an international icon and earned her enduring popularity. Diana died in a car accident that happened in Paris, throwing the entire United Kingdom and the world into grief.

HVG reported that the Royal couple visited Budapest, Hungary exactly 30 years ago in May as the first country on their tour after the Soviet Union fell into pieces. The couple arrived on May 7 and was welcomed by Árpád Göncz, the formal President of Hungary. After the couple landed at Budapest Airport, which celebrated its 70th birthday this week, they were greeted with a luxurious dinner party at the Parliament.

During their four-day visit, Diana and Prince Charles visited the Great Market Hall, the Fisherman’s Bastion, visited Bugac (a village in Bács-Kiskun County), and even tasted pálinka. The Prince of Wales held a speech at the Karl Marx University of Economic Sciences (today, the Corvinus University of Budapest), while Diana even visited the Pető Institute (part of the Semmelweis University) and the Hungarian Film Studios.
