Chief proposes scrapping Roma self-government
Budapest, February 8 (MTI) – Roma self-government ÖRO leader István Hegedűs said on Monday that he would propose disbanding the national organisation at its next general assembly.
Hegedűs suggested that a general assembly would be called before February 15.
Concerning the ailing organisation’s problems, Hegedűs said that ORO had to repay 140 million forints last year, originally provided to the organisation for a contested Roma integration programme. He added that the programme was subject to 10-12 investigations by Hungary’s authorities, but added that all investigations were linked to decisions by ÖRO’s previous leaders.
